Annual CO2 Emission Allowances represent an authorization to emit - expressed in tons of equivalent CO2- are assigned to participants to The Emissions Trading System, which defines the maximum tolerable level of CO2 emissions. They can be traded among the ETS participants: if a company reduces its emissions, it can keep the spare allowances to cover its future needs or else sell them to another company that needs them.
